About Us
Mission and Vision
North Carolina Choral Artists’ mission is to promote growth in the music economy and community of eastern North Carolina through the hiring of its local professional musicians, and the choral arts field as a whole by supporting living composers through high quality performances and recordings of their works.
North Carolina Choral Artists aims to connect emerging arts supporters and enthusiasts with local professional musicians, and highlight the works of living composers to promote growth in the arts community and economy. Additionally, NCCA collaborates with other arts organizations and schools to promote the next generation of choral music enthusiasts, educators, and performers. We bring about this vision by our commitment to musical excellence and artistic innovation. The ensemble exists for the advancement and enjoyment of artful music and the education of arts patrons.
History
North Carolina Choral Artists was founded in 2017 under the artistic direction and leadership of James Mauk. Our first performance, under the name “Collegium Carolina”, was initiated to bring together past and present East Carolina University-affiliated singers as a reunion, and perform a variety of works that included a premiere by ECU alum Matthew Lyon Hazzard. After wonderful reviews from both the audience and the performers, the idea to evolve the ensemble into a continuing project-based choral organization began to take shape. The ensemble began meeting and performing throughout eastern NC for the next couple of years before taking a hiatus during the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2023, North Carolina Choral Artists became a registered 501(c)3 non-profit organization and resumed activities with additional leadership from its newly formed Board of Directors, a modified rehearsal schedule, and a clear mission to support the living composers who are working to keep our art form active and exciting.
